Restore Flourish
A Non-Linear Transtheoretical Framework for Evidence-Based Therapies™
By Dr. Joan Neehall
Psychological transformation rarely moves in a straight line. For clinicians working with trauma and complex affective disorders, progress can feel discontinuous, leaving both therapist and client feeling stuck when symptoms unexpectedly resurface.
Recognizing that emotional healing is dynamic rather than linear, Dr. Joan Neehall developed RESTORE-FLOURISH, a non-linear, transtheoretical framework designed to sequence evidence-based clinical interventions based on the client’s current state.
About the Framework
RESTORE-FLOURISH is not a new therapy. Instead, it serves as an integrative clinical roadmap that complements and organizes established modalities, including:
- Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
- Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT)
- Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
- Polyvagal Theory
- Mindfulness & Interoception
By evaluating client readiness, RESTORE-FLOURISH helps psychologists, social workers, and mental health clinicians organize these modalities across seven phases:
- Regulation and Safety
- Engagement and Connection
- Stabilization and Self-Awareness
- Therapeutic Processing
- Organization of Meaning
- Reconnection and Relational Repair
- Engagement in Life
Flourish is not a phase; it is a state that can occur at any phase.
This approach supports sustainable, client-centered change while enhancing therapeutic alliance and outcome. Its non-linear framework eliminates terms such as “resistance” and “failure.” We describe this recursive method as “intelligent pacing.” The question becomes: “What is the client ready for now?”
